Let’s talk about habits.
Your life today and who you are is basically the product of your habits.
Your environment matters.
The way a habit starts is with a cue. Something in your life or environment prompts your brain to start a craving.
You see your phone light up, and you check texts.
You’re in the kitchen, and you mindlessly open the fridge to “check” what’s inside.
You see the tin of biscuits on the counter, and before you know it, you’ve inhaled six of them.
Most of us don’t realise the power of our environment.
We never consciously consider how the space around us influences our day-to-day decisions.
Highlight the right cues, and hide the bad ones.
Here are a few ways you can change your environment to help you change your habits:
- Get your workout clothes out the night before so they are ready to put on as soon as you wake up. Or put your gym kit beside the door so you can get into it as soon as you get in the house from work.
- Keep a bottle or glass of water within arm’s reach at all times. This can help keep your habit of drinking more.
- Keep your phone charger in the kitchen – to stop you scrolling Facebook until midnight instead of reading or going to sleep.
And this also works the other way around – you can hide cues.
For example, I store any alcohol away in a cupboard, to avoid eye contact with the devil…
The same goes for treats and biscuits, keep them in a cupboard out of sight. (Out of sight, out of mind, right?)
